What is countertechnique?
Countertechnique provides tools for body and mind to deal with the demanding dance practice of the 21st century. It is a movement system to help the dancer think about the dancing body, focusing on the process of incorporating information into action. Within a clear structure of exercises, the Countertechnique class thoroughly prepares the body for rehearsal and performance, enabling dancers to move bigger, more fluidly and more spatially, while becoming stronger and more flexible.
Michelle grew up on stage performing since the age of 8 at Civic Centre, dance being her primary artistic expression starting with Ballet at The Federal Academy of Ballet (FAB) under the certification of Imperial Society of Teacher's of Dancing (ISTD). She received the Honours award for her Grade 5 Ballet Examinations. After finishing her Ballet, she went on to Benny School of Ballroom Dancing and without her knowledge, her teacher had enrolled her to do 2 Latin Ballroom examinations on the same day almost scoring full marks. She then competed in Latin American Ballroom Dancing winning silver and bronze medals while completing her BA (Honours) Degree in Graphic Design at Central Saint Martins College of Art, London.
Michelle has been exposed to basic contemporary dance exercises in Cunningham, Limon and Graham with Scarlett Perdereau, London (2009), worked with Battery Dance Company, NY (2010), the Tony Yap Company on performance art and COUNTERTECHNIQUE from Chunky Move, Melbourne (2013) which Michelle practices, teaches and is most fond of.
Michelle is the first to organize Malaysia’s first Countertechnique workshop with Jenia Kaasatkina (Netherlands) in Kuala Lumpur last June 2014, choreographed her first public work ‘Merah’ with live musicians, August, 2014 at The KuAsh Theatre and just recently returned from conducting CounterTechnique workshops at Debadhara Dance, New Delhi, 2015.
